Dovetailed wooden crate with lid that measures approximately 13.75” long x 8.5” wide x 8.75” high. The wood has much of the original dark finish remaining on all sides with heavier wear to the lid top. Scrapes, chips, and wear overall as to be expected on a wooden box this old.
The lid has two brass shield-shaped hinges at the back that are in good condition. The top front edge of the lid has a brass spanner bolt that holds the lid closed. There is one crack in the lid, running across near the back edge.
The front of the box is stenciled with “NAVAL LABORATORY / M. R. CARTDGS / WASHINGTON” at center. All lettering is yellow and is very readable. No other marks or stenciling on the box. The interior of the box is painted orange.
This crate has a wonderful dovetail construction and is a wonderful addition to any Civil War Navy collection. [jet] [ph:L]
