There are several maker-marked Model 1865 .56-50 cartridges (.50 caliber) with headstamps that were manufactured under military contracts in 1866. Additional examples in .50 caliber and a .52 caliber “necked” cartridge that were made for the civilian market in the post-Civil War years, some with headstamps from various well-known cartridge companies. Finally, there is a .56-46 from UMC for sporting rifles and a Spencer blank that was made for the military at the Frankford Arsenal in 1870.
