Measuring 4-1/2 by 2 inches, this ornate flask is in very good condition with tight seams, no dents and sharp detail. The brown lacquer finish is largely intact, showing just some minor age spots and shallow scratches or wear to the raised edge of the bottom crescent. The “peacock and pillar” designation needs no explanation: the peacock stands prominently atop a flowery-vine-entwined pillar with a pair of crossed revolvers overhead and the shape of the flask itself mirrors the foliate and floral motifs. The brass cap and spout show bright metal mixed with some age spots on the sides and some scratches from the spring and thin brown corrosion on the top flat, but also some gilt in the area shielded by the spring, which shows mostly as gray.
Rapley notes this is often found in cased Colt 1855 New Model Root Pocket Revolvers and likely purchased by one of Colt’s larger dealers from a maker in France. It is a great example of high Victorian design and mid-1850s taste. [sr] [ph:L]
