A good example of the eagle and shield flask embossed on both sides with an eagle with raised wings underneath an arc of nine stars, with four more flanking it, and raised lines indicating sunrays in an arc over the eagle’s head, running wingtip to wingtip. The eagle clutches the US shield at top with one claw and a cluster of arrows on the viewer’s right with the other, with a long olive branch spreading out from behind the shield to the viewer’s left. A pair of long-barreled revolvers are crossed at bottom center.

The motifs are done in high relief and show somewhat lighter on the most raised portions from natural handling and rubbing, with much of the ground on the face and sides showing an old lacquer finish that has darkened almost to black, with rubbed surfaceds showing a pleasing, mellow, aged copper color. The brass cap has a medium, aged patina on the sides, mixed with some darker age spots and a little thin green. The thumbpiece and spring are in place. The top edge outside the spring shows scratches and wear, but the spring has shielded the surface inside its curve, which shows a good deal of gilt finish between it and the spout.

The spring itself shows some faded blue mixed with brown corrosion that shows on the screwhead on the top and the pivot of the thumbpiece. The body shows a number of small, shallow dents and one seam has an opening between the swell of the body and the collar, but the embossed motifs are quite distinct and not affected. The body measures 3-1/4 by 1-1/4 inches. These are associated with the Remington Beals pocket revolvers of the late 1850s.   [sr] [ph:L]
