An excellent condition example of flask #F12 in Rapley’s typology, the only Colt Navy flask with the embossed pattern shown on both sides, finely detailed die work attributed to Dixon and Sons of Sheffield, and supplied by Colt with later Second Model 1851 Navies and some Third Models. The body measures 5-1/2 by 3 inches and has the correct, slanted, tapering, fixed spout with stepped base. This has tight seams, no dents, very good, deep, warm brown lacquer color showing just some thin fingerprint size darker spots on the lower neck and upper body on both sides, with lots of gilt on the brass top, pleasing blue on the spring with just a fleck or two of verdigris, and a mellow, medium bright patina to the sides of the cap and spout. The elaborate design uses a stand of arms- pikes, US flags and single-star pennants, etc., with a US shield prominently at center, a cannon in the foreground, scattered military paraphernalia on the ground, including trumpets, helmet, cannonballs, an anchor, etc., along with a pair of revolving rifles and pistols crossed above, and “COLTS PATENT” in raised letters below them and in the upper angle of the banners. The pattern is similar to earlier flasks, but with the shield added, and the whole rounded at the bottom. The same design is used in a variant with adjustable spout, but then changes again, with the elimination of the shield, etc., in American-made flasks by Batty and Mathewman.
