Offered here is a mid-19th century powder flask: a two-piece copper body with a classic raised “Shell & Bush” motif. Mounted with four copper pins and brass suspension-rings on sides.
The brass top was attached with three screws; the heads of two have sheared off, but the piece remains firmly attached. The four-step spout is stamped “AM. FLASK & CAP” but again, the pin has been sheared off. The thumb tab and spring remain perfectly functional although the spring is slightly “out of whack”.
In overall fine untouched condition, just showing old, honest use. The body with deeply embossed flutes and smooth copper patina. No separation or repairs to the seams. Overall length, 8.75".
The American Flask & Cap Company was a gunpowder flask and shot pouch manufacturer that operated from 1857 to 1865, with its factory in New York City and later Waterbury, Connecticut. During the Civil War, the company mass-produced flasks for both military and civilian use. [jet][ph:L]
