Iron, two cavity bullet mold for the .36 caliber, Model 1851 Colt Revolving Belt Pistol or Navy Pistol. This is a .36 caliber, six-shot, cap and ball revolver that was designed by Samuel Colt between 1847 and 1850. Colt first referred to this Revolver as the Ranger Size model, and then Revolving Belt, but the designation "Navy" quickly took over.

Total production numbers of the Colt 1851 Navy Revolver were exceeded only by the Colt Pocket models in concurrent development, and numbered some 215,000 domestic units and about 42,000 produced in the Colt London Armory.

This mold casts one round ball and one elongated bullet. Steel sprue cutter is attached to the top at the hinge pin and is clearly marked "COLT'S / PATENT". Cavities remain clean. Stamped “S” on one side of mold block with “W.A.T.” military inspector’s initials below. The entire mold remains blued and in near mint condition.

"W.A.T." refers to pieces inspected by Captain William Anderson Thornton, a U.S. military inspector. These markings are highly sought after by collectors, indicating a government contract and official military acceptance.

This is an excellent example of a martially marked Colt bullet mold.   [jet][ph:L]
