This powder horn measures about 7-1/4” overall and has a classic York County style base plug- convex, lathe-turned, with a flat band around the base where it joins the horn, the band having an incised line around its top with a notched, rope border edge above, and then rounded convex steps decorated with incised lines around their perimeters and rope pattern edges, ending at the top (or bottom) with a raised ring with recessed, concave center. In a larger horn this might have been fitted with a staple for a shoulder strap. In this case the horn was likely carried in a hunting pouch. The upper end is turned to create at tapered spout with raised band and deep groove to retain a cord for a wood plug.
The body of the horn is a yellow, cream color with some thin brown stains and some scratches, but only a very small chip or two at the base plug, one at a tack. The wood plug has nice, untouched color and surface. One of the tacks is missing, allowing a slight gap around the edge of the plug. Nothing a little TLC would not cure, otherwise just some natural dust and soiling from the past two-hundred years or so. [sr][ph:m]
