Unissued mainspring vise for muskets and rifle-muskets. Original blued finish with strong “US” stamp on thumb tab. Inspector’s initials stamped on back side of frame “JAG” for James A. Greer. An “N” is also stamped on the lower part of the frame.
James A. Greer was a U.S. Navy inspector in 1848, and the authors of “Gun Tools, their history and identification” suggest that this could have been made for M1842 muskets used by the Navy.
The mainspring vise was an essential tool for the soldier, enabling him to compress the spring powering the lock of his musket or rifle so that the lock could be disassembled for cleaning or repair. Sergeants were probably supervising things closely and keeping these out of the hands of the idle, the curious, and the aspiring amateur gunsmiths in the company.
Excellent condition. [jet][ph:L]
