A well-used eagle-and-shield powder flask for a pocket-size percussion pistol. These flasks show the multitude of variations in motifs and the art of die-sinking in general. This example has a good seam, except a small separation, approximate ½ inch section, midway along one side. Motifs are clear on the 3 1/4-inch-long brass body that has a mellow brass tone with some darker spots in recesses. The thumb-piece, spout and spring are all present but, are currently stuck in place with verdigris.
Both sides show an American eagle peering up to its left, with raised wings, under a sunburst glory of stars. The eagle clutches a US shield with one claw and with the other, holds five arrows jutting out to one side from behind the shield. An olive branch spreads from the other. A pair of cocked revolvers are crossed underneath.
As stated earlier the flask has seen some action with a few small dents and dings. The most noticeable being at the right eagle wing on one side. The pattern usually attributed to the American Flask Company and often paired by collectors with Colt model 1849 pocket revolvers. Overall, the flask measures 4 inches in length by 1 ¾ inches wide.
