This is a full pack of cartridges for .44 caliber “Army” revolvers. This is a drilled wood block with a printed paper label wrapped and sealed over the whole piece.

The label reads, “[S]ix Seamless Skin / CARTRIDGES, / WITH PERCUSSION CAPS / FOR COLT’S ARMY PISTOL, / 44-100 CALIBER / Hotchkiss’ Patent, Feb. 11th, 1862. / MANUFACTURED BY / D.C. SAGE, Middletown, Conn.”

The pack has been opened across the top of the pack. The pack remains full of cartridges, actually too full! The wood block has seven drilled holes. These were to hold six cartridges; a small pack of percussion caps was to go in the seventh hole. This pack contains seven cartridges. Likely just a production error caused by a tired worker.

DeWitt Clinton Sage used the Hotchkiss patent to make “seamless skin” cartridge cases out of sheep or hog intestines. This made them moisture resistant, yet completely consumed upon firing. The U.S. Ordnance Department placed considerable orders for this ammunition during the Civil War.

Package, label, and contents remain in good condition with only light soiling from handling. A rarity to find a full package of Civil War revolver cartridges.   [jet] [ph:L]
