This tool, the M1855 tumbler punch or band spring punch, was used for removing pins and depressing gun barrel band springs. Two different sized punches are mounted on the arms.

Following the Civil War surplus quantities of these tools were altered for use with newer weapons. In this instance, one end was ground down to form a screw driver blade needed for the M1866 rifle musket. The arm of the tool that was altered in stamped “US” on both sides.
