Just about every US rifle or carbine cartridge box of the period has a small separate implement pouch for the gun tools, oily rags, etc., necessary for the cleaning and maintenance of the soldier’s weapon.

This tool, the tumbler punch or band spring punch, was used for removing pins and depressing gun barrel band springs. Two different sized punches are mounted on the arms. Original deep blue remains. Unmarked.    [jet][ph:L]
