A very nice, untouched York or Lancaster powder horn with screw tip in place. This measures 11-inches overall and features a convex base plug with narrow, deeply incised edge groove followed by a convex curve rising to a beaded ring around the top with narrow raised edge inside it and very shallow, almost flat central disk with a thick iron D-ring/staple for a suspension strap. The neck is fitted with a comparatively thin, long iron staple. The upper portion of the horn matches the screwtip in an olive-brown tone, with the body transitioning into a cream color with thin, stains and rubs near the base.
The condition overall is very good, the horn showing just moderate use, wear, and long storage. The upper edge of the base plug, at the horn, shows some very minor chips and there is one short gouge just touching one of the beads. Otherwise there is just some slight rubbing to some of the raised beads around encircling the end of the base plug and a couple of small white spots that would clean. One of our staff suggested the carver may have intended to create a rope border on the end of the base plug, but changed his mind and went for simpler, rounded beads instead of rope coils. The horn has a great, untouched look to it and screw-tip horns are especially sought-after. [sr][ph:m/L]
