This is a non-excavated model 1863 musket tool. Two screw driver blades with a cone wrench. Designed for the standard rifle musket. By eliminating the clean-out screw on the M1863 rifle musket, the smaller third blade on the M1855 wrench was no longer needed. Of special interest are the inspector’s initials stamped on the neck “H.K”. Henry Kirk is known to have been a sub-inspector at Springfield Armory during the Civil War. Iron shows dark patina with patches of light surface rust.
A very typical, but important tool to every infantryman. Rare to find these with inspector’s stamp. [jet][ph:L]
