This is the .56 caliber cartridge for the Colt Revolving Rifle. The bullet has a pointed nose, solid base, two grooves, and slightly rebated base where the paper powder cylinder is attached. Typical Colt cartridge works construction. Paper portion has been coated with something akin to shellac to protect it and keep it from any damage. The cartridge is otherwise in perfect condition.
The Colt Revolving rifles were early repeating rifles produced by the Colt Rifle Manufacturing Company from 1855 until 1864. The design was similar to their revolvers, with a rotating cylinder, but in longer rifle form. Colt revolving rifles were attractive because of their high rate of fire. However, the rifles were generally disliked by soldiers due to the occurrence of chain-fire (where a spark could set off all chambers in the cylinder.
A rare cartridge. [jet][ph:L]
