ALLEN AND THURBER POCKET PISTOL

$350.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 490-2601

Ethan Allen was a prolific gun maker whose long-lived company went through many iterations. This small single-shot percussion pistol dates to his partnership with Charles Thurber starting in 1837 and has the steeper drop to the grip characteristic of his early pistols. The bar hammer is stamped on the left side “ALLEN’S PATENT,” which covered his double action, and the frame has the broad floral scroll engraving on the frame typical of his products. This pistol is .31 caliber and would qualify as gentleman’s pocket or lady’s muff pistol, easily concealed, drawn, and fired with no cocking needed, just the pull of the trigger.

The bar hammer shows some blue and brown on the sides from old case hardening. The frame and barrel are gray, with some spotting, but no pitting and just one or two light dings. The lettering and the engraving are sharp. The half-octagonal and half-round barrel is the screw-off type. The grips are bag shaped and have good color, though with some handling marks.

These simple pocket pistols remained in production until the Civil War, sometimes show up in period photos, and have occasionally been excavated in Civil War camps. For an example, see Phillips, Excavated Artifacts Vol. 1, Plate 70, No.5. It would thus fit well in a display of soldiers’ personal effects as well as arms carried by travelers, westerners, gamblers and more nefarious types. This is a nice example of this popular pistol.  [sr] [ph:m]
