5", .60 cal. barrel dated "G / 1817". Lock engraved "MAUBEUGE / MANUF". All iron furniture. Fine+ stock but a couple of age cracks and a minor wood loss near the front band but easily repaired. Original ramrod. Ex. crisp working order, smooth fine metal overall.

Note: Reorganized from the Royal Marechaussee 1790-91, the Gendarmerie became the Gendarmerie Imperial in 1804. After 1815 they became Louis XVIII's men (secret police). Their tasks were many, guarding Army supply trains, enforcing inscription, hunting down and eliminating state enemies. Each recruit must be ex-soldier of infantry or cavalry, a proven combat veteran of at least four campaigns. Both foot and mounted gendarmes carried a carbine and bayonet. In addition, the foot carried these pistols and a briquet; the mounted a heavy cavalry sword and a pair of these Year 9 pistols in their coat pockets, for use when dismounted. Army officers were also known to tuck one into an overcoat pocket. [PE] [ph:L]
