The American Arms Company made about 5,000 of these double barrel deringers from about 1866 to 1878. They use a brass frame and a pair of superimposed barrels that are rotated manually for loading and firing. This is their .22 caliber and .32 caliber (rimfire) combination. The top of one barrel is marked “AMERICAN ARMS CO. BOSTON MASS” and the other barrel completes it with, “WHEELER’S PATENT OCT. 31. 1865 – JUNE. 19. 1866.” The lettering is sharp and clear. The brass frame has a nice, untouched patina. The wood grips have a flat bottom and show small scratches, dings and handling marks, and a small chip at the left toe, but have good color and show just a narrow shrinkage gap at the frame from age. The barrel assembly shows shallow pitting, on one side, also bearing a collection number in ink on white, there is a small ding to the rim of the thumb depression and the pitting is mostly forward of that. On the other it is much lighter, mostly toward the rear, and the forward section shows some faint hints of thin blue in the channel. Both sights are in place.

This is a nice example of the trend toward pocket pistols in the post-Civil War years, whether carried in an overcoat for security in a city or in a vest pocket at a poker table out west. The company produced an estimated 3,000 deringers with this combination of calibers and this style of grip, with others using only .22 or only .32 caliber barrels, and also a .41 caliber rimfire version, so there is a fair variety for the collector to assemble.  [sr] [ph:L]
