The Prescott revolver was an infringement on the Rollin White patent and manufacture was halted through legal action by Smith & Wesson. These revolvers were produced between 1861 to 1863 and production numbers only reached a few hundred.

Revolver is .38 rimfire with a blued barrel, six-shot cylinder and hammer with brass frame and walnut grips. Item bears serial number 85.

Barrel lengths for this revolver vary and can be found at 6 ½, 7 ½ and 8 ½ inches. This blued octagon barrel measures 5 ½ inches and has evidently been shortened an inch. This is not readily evident. All the blue remains on the barrel. Front sight is mortised into its surface and the top has a worn but readable marking of “E. A. PRESCOTT, WORCESTER, MASS. PAT. OCT 2, 1860.” Bore is very good with some light surface dirt.

The cylinder also retains its blue and has the locking notches at the rear instead of the front as seen on earlier production examples.

Frame is entirely of brass which now has a light mellow patina. Action has no half-cock and operates properly at full cock. Cylinder locks in place when fully cocked.

Walnut grips are excellent with light signs of wear on bottom surface.

Screwheads show only light wear if any.

In March of 1862 the state of Kansas bought 400 of these revolvers which were carried by the state militia. It is also believed many were purchased by Union officers and soldiers for use as a private side arm.  [ad] [ph:L]
