An original cap and ball percussion sidearm produced by the Whitney Firearms Company of New Haven, Connecticut, this sidearm is designated the Navy Second Model Revolver, 3^rd Type. In very good overall condition, this solid frame sidearm is a .36 caliber, three-screw model frame with a 6-shot unrebated cylinder mated to a 7½” long, octagonal barrel. A total quantity of 33,000 of these handguns were produced from the late 1850s through the early 1860s with over half the Second Models purchased by the government.

The back of the cylinder has six safety notches for the hammer; all of the original roll engraved scene remains on the cylinder. A solid frame revolver, it bears matching serial numbers of “22243” on the loading lever, barrel, the cylinder pin, cylinder, and inside of the both grips.

Two-piece varnished walnut grips have smooth even wear on surfaces, however left grip has crack running the length. They display the rounded juncture to the frame and the grip edges show light wear.

All gunmetal nice dark patina with significant original blue and case colors. Barrel address marking is the standard two-line block letter “E. WHITNEY / N. HAVEN”.

Sidearm has a brass trigger guard and an iron backstrap. Mechanics are good, tight and crisp.
