.69 caliber. Actually made in 1781. The last 2 numbers of that date appear on the rear of the 7-inch round barrel. The lock plate is engraved “Mauberge”. Standard military issue brass butt-cap, trigger guard and frame. Original steel belt hook. This first type of Model 1777 was produced with a belt hook, which was retained by a mounting screw under the brass frame. The ramrod typically has a button head this one is trumpet head and French none-the-less.
The Model 1777 Mauberge Pistol was made at the armory at Maubeuge. Both French and American troops were armed with these pistols during the Revolutionary war. Good working order. In fine condition. A good original example of an American revolutionary war era pistol and is the exact model pistol that the earliest U.S. gun makers copied namely North and Cheney. Also engraved on the butt plate as a period stylized "VA" and as this weapon was found in Virginia over 60 years ago this mark is likely Revolutionary War vintage or Federal Period. [pe] [ph:L]
