SECOND MODEL, FOURTH TYPE WHITNEY NAVY REVOLVER WITH HOLSTER

$1,450.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 362-1097

The Whitney Navy revolver was made from the late 1850’s to the early 1860s and saw extensive use in the Civil War.

This revolver is serial number 18,835. It is .36 caliber with a 7.75 inch barrel and a 6-shot round cylinder. The surface of the revolver is gun metal gray with moderate to heavy scattered mottling on the barrel, frame and cylinder. Lightly scratched into the lower portion of the buttstrap are the initials “W K”.

The octagonal barrel is marked “E. WHITNEY” over “N. HAVEN.” Bore has very good rifling but does show some minor dust and dirt.

The cylinder has no visible scene. There are some hints of it but not much. The action is very good.  Cylinder indexes properly. Hammer holds at half and full cock and falls properly. When at full cock there is very little, if any, play in the cylinder.  All nipples are original.

The walnut grips are in good condition with a faint military inspector’s cartouche on the left side. Trigger guard is brass.

All the screw heads on the frame and the grips show light wear.

Loading lever has wedged shaped latch and matches the barrel and the frame in color.

The leather holster has been with this revolver for a very long time as the leather has molded itself to the shape of the gun. The flap shows heavy crazing with some surface finish loss but it is still pliable and if desired it will still lockdown on the brass finial. The leather on the body of the holster shows moderate to heavy wear with a 3.50 inch split running along the top toward the muzzle end. The bottom edge seam is still good. The plug at the bottom is gone as is a small bit of the surrounding leather so the revolver’s muzzle pokes through about an eighth of an inch. Belt loop on the reverse has come loose along the top edge.  [ad][ph:L]
