Formally advertised by Remington as their “New Repeating Pistol [Elliott’s Pat.] No. 1,” this four-barrel deringer rates about very good for condition, being all original, with clear markings, and showing strong remnants of a blue finish turned plum brown on the frame, with some in the recessed channels of the barrel assembly, and other metal rubbed silver gray. The dark, wood panels of the grips are good, showing a few scratches, but no chips and nice edges to flowing contours of the grips. The markings are very clear. The top flat of the barrel assembly is stamped, “Manufactured by E. Remington & Sons. Ilion. N.Y.” over “Elliot’s Patents. May 29. 1860 – Oct. 1. 1861.” The mechanics are good. The bore is a little dirty, but shows good rifling. The serial number is 1722, putting it pretty early in the production run, which ran from 1863 to 1888, essentially from the Civil War right through the Wild West.
Remington made these ring-trigger, multi-barrel, repeating deringers in both .22 and .32 caliber, totaling about 25,000 in all, with this, the .22 caliber, being the scarcer, estimated by Flayderman at 30% of the production, about 7,500. They were made in a variety of finishes: blue, nickel, silvered and a combination of nickel and blue. The barrel assembly tilts forward for loading or extracting cartridges. The ring trigger made it hard to tangle up in a pocket or fire by accident and actuates a rotating firing pin that moves to the next round as it is pulled, giving the user some firepower in a close-in fight across a card table, out a stagecoach window, or in a theatre alleyway.
