Iron mounted flintlock pistol with a .69 caliber, smoothbore, octagonal barrel 8-inches long. There are London view and proofmarks on the left barrel flat near the breech, the maker’s name “DUTTON” in block letters on the top flat near the frizzen, and again on the lockplate forward of the hammer. Simple matching geometric/floral bands at the barrel breach and the rear of the lockplate, with larger floral and geometric designs on the breechplug tang. Short rammer entry pipe and short thimble placed close to it. A simple wood rammer is with it. The bore is a bit dirty and shows some scattered light rust. The lock and breechplug screwheads nicely incised with starburst designs. The mechanics are good.
The triggerguard tang is the classical pineapple design. The triggerguard bow is a simple curve without recurved elements. The grip strap extends part way down the bag shaped grip, which made without a butt cap. The toe of the frizzen has a very nice upward curl. The frizzen spring is fitted with a roller for quicker ignition. The metal was cleaned at some point. The barrel shows largely as smooth, gray metal, toning down, but with scattered shallow pitting. The cleaning left the name on the barrel a bit light, but completely legible. The triggerguard shows some shallow pitting and wear to floral motifs engraved on the bottom of the triggerguard bow.
The wood is warm brown with darker stains, showing light scratches and dings. A tight V-shaped crack meets at the forward lock screw on the left side. The right and left show a hairline from stock tip back through the opening for the barrel wedge on the left and extending to the forward rammer thimble on the right. Dutton is possibly Edward Dutton, working in London ca. 1761 – 1783, though some would feel the use of a roller on the frizzen spring points to a slightly later date. [sr][ph:L]

This is an extremely rare M1840 U.S. artillery officer’s saber made by Ames but etched and retailed by Schuyler, Hartley and Graham. Thillmann knew only of this one example, and until it was found it was unclear if Schuyler, Hartley and Graham… (870-637). Learn More »
