This is a Smith & Wesson, No. 2, Old Model Army Revolver. It is a .32 caliber, six-shot revolver with 5” octagonal barrel and rosewood handles. Has early serial number of 1487 on butt strap. Production began in 1861, with 35,731 revolvers being made by May 1, 1865. Total production was 77,155 through 1874.

Barrel, frame, and cylinder match in tone and condition; dark pewter tone with scattered darker patches. Rosewood handles are very good with original dark color, grain, and finish. Stamping on the top of the barrel is good: “SMITH & WESSON. SPRINGFIELD, MASS.” Rounded blade sight on top at muzzle. Cylinder is worn and has no patent information remaining. Bore is clear with light oxidation amid the rifling. Hammer, trigger, indexing mechanics are crisp and strong although hammer does not stop at half cock. Pistol has the usual slight wobble at the hinge.

A fine example of a popular S & W revolver.   [jet] [ph:L]
