Also known as the New Model Navy, the Model 1861 Navy was essentially the same pistol as the Late 4th Model 1851 Navy, but with a round barrel and “creeping” loading lever, giving it a smoother profile, admired by many collectors. These pistols have their own serial number sequence beginning with “1” in 1861 and running up #38843 in 1873.  This one is serial number 6975, giving it a production date of 1862, to which Wilson (and Jordan) attribute #4600 up to #9999.

This is in fair to good condition, showing use, but with all original parts and complete. It was  cleaned at some point with the barrel, loading assembly and cylinder now showing a mix of bright and gray, with salt-and-pepper pitting on the barrel and deeper pitting, dings and gray spots on the cylinder leaving just portions of the barrel address and the cylinder scene visible. Most of the screw slots show some sign of turning. The frame, however, is smooth metal, gray, showing a crisp “COLTS / PATENT” stamp on the left. The brass has a medium, aged color showing some brown tones on the backstrap and slightly lighter color to the triggerguard, which has a sharp “36 CAL” stamp on the left triggerguard. The serial numbers on the barrel assembly, frame and buttstrap are good. The grips fit well and have nice color with smooth surface from handling, just light scratches and handling marks, no serious dings or chips, and decent edges. The bore is dusty. The mechanics are good, if a bit tight. The barrel connection of the barrel assembly and frame is a bit loose- the wedge could use some tinkering to tighten it up. Nevertheless, this is a good early-war example of the M1861 Colt Navy, complete and all original. [sr] [ph:m]
