This is a double-action Starr revolver in very good condition. It is all original with a smooth surface, a few patches of blue, and the rest of the gun metal exhibiting a matching brown/gray tone.
The markings on the revolver are: serial number 18382 on the cylinder and front of frame; “STARR ARMS, Co. NEW. YORK.” on the lower left frame; and “STARR’S PATENT JAN. 15, 1856” on the lower right frame. The wood grip shows light wear with typical dings on the butt, tight fit, fine brown color, and two well-worn but present inspector cartouches.
The overall condition is very good. Patches of original blue are found on loading lever and on underside of barrel where covered by loading lever. All other gun metal has matching brown/gray tone with smooth surface. No dings to be seen. Bore is clear with scattered light pitting and retains some rifling. One of the nipples is hammered down. Double-action mechanics are crisp and strong.
The Starr Arms Company in Binghamton, NY, was the third largest supplier of revolvers to the U.S government in the Civil War, delivering 16,100 of these .44 caliber double-action revolvers on contract from January 1862 to mid-1863, and another 4,950 in May 1864 on a separate purchase agreement, for a total of 21,050. Non-governmental sales are estimated at 2,000, for a total production run of about 23,000. Colt’s pricing practices had left a bad taste in the mouths of ordnance officers and Starr and Remington revolvers gained preference by 1864.
A fine Civil War revolver. [jet][ph:L]
