The P38 was developed by Walther as a replacement for the Luger. The new pistol went through several design changes from 1931 to 1938, ending up with a more reliable pistol using fewer parts and at lower cost. Army orders started in April 1939 with initial delivery of 13,000 up to May 1940 and then increased into the hundreds of thousands, with other manufacturers called on to aid in production.

This is a good example, complete with holster, the pistol showing a Waffenamt consisting of an abstract eagle over “88” on the right and “CYQ” on the left indicating manufacture by Spreewerk, a factory in Grottau, Czechoslovakia using slave labor, starting production in June 1942 and making some 280,000 before being taken by the Russians in 1945. Slide and frame are both numbered 4127 with a “v” and beneath the barrel on the front “7104/J,” which, by our understanding of the manufacturer’s codes, would date it to November 1943.

This shows some wear to the finish and some fine scratches on the sides of the slide. Spreewerk products are noted as less well finished than those of other makers, though the P38 stamp on the left seems a bit light, indicating a cleaning at some point. The grips are good. A magazine is in place. The mechanics are fine. The bore shows rifling. The backstrap shows some shading to brown. The soft shell brown leather holster has the P38 stamp and “jwa” marking of Moritz Stecher, Lederwerk, Freiburg. The leather shows flexing, stains, and use, but is complete and solid.  [sr] [ph:L]
