In 1865, as the American Civil War was coming to an end, the firm of E. Remington & Sons began to look at the reality of an immediate future without large US military manufacturing contracts as their primary market. This diminutive handgun was clearly intended for sale to the general public and was not a military pattern firearm. The new pocket model was essentially a scaled-down version of the large frame Remington percussion revolvers that had been sold to the US military by the thousands during the Civil War.

This gun is a five-shot, single action, .31 caliber percussion revolver. The silhouette of the gun was almost identical to the larger Remington percussion revolvers with the spur trigger without a trigger guard being a significant change in the profile. The octagonal barrel is 3.5” in length and the overall length of the revolver is about 8”. The top flat of the barrel is clearly marked in three lines: “PATENTED SEPT. 14. 1858. MARCH 17. 1863 / E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. NEW YORK U.S.A. / NEW MODEL”. The revolver is serial number 7476, and this number is found under the barrel (concealed by the loading lever). Remnants of original blue remain on the barrel, loading lever, and to a lesser extent on the frame. The plate surrounding the trigger is nickel plated. This gun is mechanically crisp and strong; indexing very well.

The original Grips were two-piece varnished walnut and remain in very good condition. The grips are solid with just the slightest wear along the bottom edges. A nice, albeit smaller, percussion revolver.    [jet][ph:L]

This is a very nice CDV photograph of Charles E. Crow in Confederate uniform. It appears to be a second-generation image; photo of an existing photo. Regardless, the picture is clear with good contrast. Crow wears a Confederate 2nd lieutenant's,… (1138-988). Learn More »
