A rare French officer's pistol in flint and steel configuration and in superb unaltered condition. The approximately .54 caliber barrel is smooth bore and 8 inches in length. It is held in place by a "key". It has a rear fixed open sight and a small Paktong (early German silver) front sight. The metal surface is clean with minor discoloration. The lock plate looks to be in original factory burnish and is marked " Mre. Rle. de Charleville", which translates to Manufacture Royal of Charleville. Charleville closed its doors in 1836 so this pistol pre-dates that event and probably was made years prior to this. The minty walnut stock is nicely inspected. In form it is that of the First Empire with beautifully checkered "pistol grips" and the back-strap of the iron trigger guard is likewise factory checkered. The brass mounts are in beautiful plum brown patina. The original brass tipped ramrod is baleen or whale bone. Never found in this condition and few survive in original flint. [pe][ph:L]
