A Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army revolver in good original used condition. In production from 1860 through 1873, these handguns were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols. The Model 1860 Army was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War with over 127,000 Colt revolvers acquired by the Union government during the conflict.

This revolver is a .44 caliber, three-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder and an 8” long barrel. All matching serial numbers”109,563” on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt strap, cylinder, and even on the wedge. Serial number dates the manufacture to mid-1863 production, at a time when Colt’s Factory was running around the clock to meet wartime demand.

This model sidearm was equipped with recoil shield cutouts on the frame and the small notch on the base of the butt plate for mounting a shoulder stock. This frame is of the three-screw variety, with the four-screw official shoulder mounting being eliminated from production by 1863. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Barrel address, “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA” is strong. A small sub inspector mark “B” is stamped at the left rear of the barrel housing. Very little holster wear on the muzzle. Rolled cylinder scene remains lightly visible with “B” stamped on the rebated portion of the cylinder and “G” on the flat portion. Patent date and last four serial numbers are all present. The “COLTS / PATENT” mark on the left side is unevenly stamped with “PATENT” fading out at the bottom. Original nipples are in good condition. The safety pins are all flattened from usage.

Brass trigger guard has a mellow golden patina with sub inspector mark “C” stamped in the bow. Iron back strap stamped with a small “D” near the back of the hammer. The entire gun wears a mottled grey/brown patina. The brown on the surface appears to be an old hardened oil that would probably clean up. Some scattered light corrosion on the left side frame and recoil shield. The lock-up on the loading lever is perfect. Screw heads are mostly good and all appear to have not been turned in a very long time. The cylinder wedge screw head is somewhat battered but, all period usage.

The grips are original one-piece walnut and in very good condition with no chips or gouges. Both cartouches are very light from wear with mainly the outside rectangle visible.

This is a classic, mid war production “Colt Army” revolver, that was the main side arm of the Union forces and a favorite capture of the Confederate cavalry. [stp][ph:L]
