One would date this large flint and steel pistol no later than 1770. The raised decorative carving in the walnut stock and the horn nose cap suggest a mounted officer's weapon of the Potsdam-Spandau variety of Prussia origin but it also shows Dutch influences. The part round, part octagonal 11-inch .75 caliber barrel has a deep brown patina and is held to the stock by pins. There is a brass blade front sight. On the left side of the barrel there is a small indentation that is not unsightly. The "banana" shaped round lock plate has the early bridle-less frizzen. Its patina is a deep brown, and all its components are original; it functions perfectly. The pistol is brass mounted.
The ramrod pipes are round and accept a large diameter ramrod; in this case the ramrod is an old replacement. The side plate is the wavy 3 screw type typical of such Germanic pistols in general and Prussian ones in particular. The heavy brass butt cap has 2-inch-long straps which date it closer to 1770 than 1760. There is a large brass wrist escutcheon with a crowned royal or heraldic engraving on it. The long elaborate brass trigger guard has an iron screw reinforcing it just below the front of the lock plate, this is period but may have been a "field" modification.
This pistol is pretty much unmolested and uncleaned and certainly original flint. It is typical of the pistols used here during the Revolutionary War. [pe] [ph:L]
