This type was designed to be easily hidden on one's person but deadly; they were later in the Victorian Era called "Muff Pistols" or "Ladies Pistols".
Measuring only 8 inches overall this brass mounted pistol is .45 caliber and was made by Sharp of Maidstone in Kent about 1765. It is lightly engraved on the lock in front of the original flint hammer "SHARP". The 2-piece iron "cannon" barrel" is 4 inches long and has English view and proof stamps. It unscrews easily even today. The walnut half stock has some decorative silver wire inlays and a brass wrist escutcheon. The butt cap is brass and is "masked" with what looks like an angry dolphin. There is a decorative laurel brass side plate opposite the lock plate. The pistol is well used and is in the original flint configuration. It is in very good condition with no pitting on the iron components but some minor wood chipping at the rear of the lock. [pe][ph:L]
