This percussion, single-shot, double-action bar hammer pocket pistol is a nice specimen produced by the Allen & Thurber firm of Worcester, Massachusetts between 1845 and 1854.
Pistol is a .36 caliber weapon with a 3” long, screw-off, barrel (half round, half octagonal). Total revolver length is approximately 6.5”. Two-piece grips are walnut, varnished and in good condition with some small dings on one side. Frame, hammer, and barrel are all covered with very fine pitting and darker spotting. Brass trigger guard. Factory engraving in a floral motif executed on both sides of the frame. Strong mechanics, nipple intact.
Barrel facets stamped “PATENTED / 1845 / CAST STEEL / 908”. Bar hammer stamped “ALLENS PATENT” on left side.
Recently acquired from the “Old Stone House Museum” in Windsor, NY. Blue museum sticker with “SHM / P-1” on frame and comes with museum cards. [jet][ph:L]
