This example has all matching numbers. The 4-inch barrel retains about 10 percent of its original blue but is mostly gun metal color with scattered pitting here and there some heavier on the right side toward the muzzle. The barrel is stamped: "ADDRESS SAML. COLT” over HARTFORD CT.". The rifled bore is good. The loading lever assembly has no case colors remaining and is now gray. The frame retains 10% case-hardened color but has turned to gun metal gray color. It has the stamp "COLTS" over "PATENT" on the left side. Little factory blue is on the frame screws. The 5 shot cylinder has an excellent rolled scene, a crisp serial number, patent stamp and 10% factory blue that is graying. The nipples are not battered; and the gun shows use but no abuse. The cock has good color, and the mechanics work perfectly. The brass trigger bow has about 75% of its original thin silver plating and the balance of the back strap assembly has about 70% silver finish. The silver has oxidized to a mix of muted silver and bluish-gray tarnish. The grips are good, with a dark brown color, 70% varnish with wear and handling marks. The grip is a tight fit to the frame and backstrap.

Colt made more than 300,000 of this popular .31 caliber revolver from 1850 through 1873. This one is serial number 133326 which gives it an 1857 date of manufacture. The pistol was a convenient size for carrying as a personal defense firearm. Initially aimed at the large numbers of fortune-seekers heading west, it was very popular with goldminers and travelers of all sorts. The convenient size and light weight also made it a popular side arm with Civil War officers, who were not about to lug heavy army-caliber revolvers on long marches, but could use a personal sidearm in addition to a regulation sword.  Here is a good looking well used example. This Colt pocket revolver would look great in a western or Civil War display and is much better than most offered today. [pe][ph:L]
