These iron mounted .65 caliber smooth bore pistols were made in what is now Belgium. They are engraved on the locks "Laurent gilles" and date to ca. 1785. The 2-stage octagonal to round key held barrels are 9 inches long. The pistols have "Patent Breeches". A patent breech is a type of breech design used in muzzleloading firearms, especially in flintlock and percussion-era rifles, where the breech end of the barrel is built into the barrel itself rather than being a separate plug.
The lock plates have slide safety mechanisms and roller frizzens. On one of the handguns the cock is a correct style modern replacement as is the screw holding the steel aka the frizzen. The mechanics on this one are non-functional. The other works perfectly. The walnut stocks are relief carved and have iron butt plates of the "bird's beak" form. There are 2 iron ramrod entry pipes. The stock end caps are antler as are the ramrod caps. Both gunstocks show stable but minor stress cracks; they are sound. Both pistols are in the original flint lock configuration. A nicely priced pair of pistols that could have been exported to America. [pe] [ph:L]
