20 inches overall with a 13 1/4-inch barrel this single shot .60 caliber pistol is not exactly what it appears to be! What it purports to be is an English made pistol of the first half of the 18th century; what it actually is, is a South-Central European copy dating about 1780 to1800 and made for commercial sale to whomever wished a side arm.  The great majority of this type of flint lock were sold east and south of the Danube being favored in Arabic speaking countries. This one is of better than average exhibiting great craftmanship and real period use.

The 13 1/4 barrel is not only engraved with pretty and varied design motifs but also bears faux (fake) London proof house marks. The barrel is fully round and has a 1/2-inch-long brass front blade sight. From heavy use the touch hole has become larger, but the weapon is in original flint configuration. The banana shaped 5-inch-long lock plate has stamped and engraved geometric and floral motifs and an early style, but in this case, money saving flash pan made without a bridle. The cock, its top jaw and screw, frizzen and frizzen spring are all original. The nicely raised carved fruitwood stock ends in a bulbous brass long strapped brass butt plate and in front it extends to the muzzle without a nose cap, as made. The stock has losses principally around the lock plate as a result of heavy period use; losses otherwise are negligible. All the stock garniture is brass. Most components are cast in relief with geometric and floral motifs. There are 2 ramrod entry pipes. The front one has a small wear hole on the right side. The removable ramrod of wood is old but not the original. This is a very impressive firearm possibly used by a Polish hussar or a Tripolitan pirate off the shores of Tripoli.   [pe][ph:L]
