This revolver with serial number 64,243 was made in 1862 and is 100% correct throughout. It is complete and rates better than good for condition. It is a three-screw model and has an 8-inch barrel. The barrel has 5% blue coverage and is a gun metal gray color mixed with scattered very light salt and pepper age browning spots. The markings on the .44 caliber barrel are: "ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT. NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA". The barrel surface is smooth. The bore is well used but good. The wedge is numbered to the revolver. The loading lever assembly shows the same surface as the barrel with very little original case color. "COLTS" over "PATENT" is visible on the left bottom of gun metal colored frame; virtually all expected case color is gone. The 6 shot cylinder has a good rolled naval scene and a gray age patina and has a matching serial number; it reads: "COLTS PATENT No. 4243 " over "PATENTED SEPT. 10th 1853". The nipples are all fine.

The trigger and the hammer (or cock) show some original color. The revolver tightly cocks and the cylinder rotates well. The backstrap has a gun metal gray patina mixed with blue and age brown with no evidence of pitting. The brass trigger guard assembly has an aged tone. The grips are a good fit and have good edges; there are a couple of tiny chips out; these are at the bottom on both sides. There is no visible inspector's mark. This revolver, made in the second year of the Civil War, shows much use but remains in respectable enough condition with great "eye appeal" and displays no evidence of tampering.  I suggest that the lack of factory finish was due to lots of combat use and holster wear or in many cases deliberate scrubbing by the trooper.  [pe][ph:L]
