This is a crisp example of an original Colt 1851, Third Model, Civilian, .36 caliber Navy Revolver. This one was manufactured sometime in 1851, and it bears the serial number 9563; the first official year of production!  All serial numbers match including the wedge. This six-shot revolver features an un-rebated cylinder with a 7½ inch long barrel. The barrel has about 30% original factory blue and otherwise has muted to a gray gun metal color overall. The barrel is stamped on the top flat " ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY". 30% original case colors remain on the three-screw frame but this like the barrel is blended with a gun metal gray color. It is stamped on the left side "COLTS PATENT". The cock has good color. The revolver has excellent mechanics. The rolled (engraved) naval engagement scene of the Republic of Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy on the cylinder is excellent. All nipples are perfect. The cylinder itself is that faded blue mixed with gun metal gray. The loading lever is in this same finish. There is no pitting or surface rust on the revolver. The brass backstrap and trigger assembly have 85% of the original silver plating. The one-piece grip fits perfectly and has about 90% varnish on it, but this is over two distinct areas of holster wear and is therefore not a period factory application. This is a really nice-looking revolver and in amazing condition for one made in the first year of production.   [pe][ph:L]
