Offered here is a Starr Double Action Army Revolver in .44, with a beautiful nickel finish. The pistol shows virtually no wear considering its age and purpose, and ranks as a fine example of one of the Civil War’s more innovative and interesting sidearms.

A matching serial number (17428) is crisply stamped on the cylinder, barrel assembly, and frame (under the hammer).  Sub inspection letters are noted on all applicable parts, and the frame is stamped on either side with “STARR. ARMS Co. NEW YORK” / “STARR’S PATENT JAN. 15. 1856.  The grips show very minor wear and retain government inspector cartouches reading “EF” for Edward Flathers, and “CSL” for Major Charles S. Lowell. The range of serial numbers for the Double Action models stopped just north of 23,000 – likely placing the date of manufacture sometime in later 1862 or earlier 1863.

The pistol is mechanically perfect, with excellent fit and function.  The heavy cocking “trigger” and rear blade trigger/sear operate the action flawlessly – with proper timing and tight lockup.  The loading lever and assembly function as-new, with a tight retaining spring for under-barrel storage.  The nipples show miniscule evidence of firing and are in excellent condition.  The hammer likewise shows no signs of heavy use and just a small imprint from resting against one of the nipples.  Some light surface oxidation is observed in the cylinder chambers but they remain clean and unpitted.  The 6” barrel has a bright bore with deep rifling and an undamaged crown.

The nickel plating is even and bright throughout, with just a few minute spots of wear (loading lever base, barrel/receiver joint).  Given the sharpness of all stampings, the well-preserved condition of the pistol, and the lack of polishing before the application of the nickel, it is likely the plating was done quite some time ago.

An outstanding martial Civil War revolver and sure to be a highlight of most any collection.  [cm][ph:L]
