Remington was one of the principal cavalry sidearms of the Civil War and dominated U.S. government purchases by 1864. This Remington New Model Army .44 Caliber Revolver is serial numbered 98,784 dating it to a later 1864 production. The metal was cleaned a long time back and it now rates good for condition, showing mostly a gun metal or metallic gray with a few darker gray age stains and scattered pitting. The serial number is sharp on the underside of the barrel and the barrel address on top is crisp and reads: PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858" over "E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK, USA. " over "NEW-MODEL". There are a series of unexplained surface or shallow dents that run 4 inches back from the muzzle on the right flat on the 8-inch-long octagonal barrel's edge.

The loading lever has kept about 65% of its now much faded factory blue. Small single letter factory inspection (sub-inspection) marks are visible on parts principally "H" and "D". The frame and its integral backstrap is mostly gun metal in color. The hammer has the same smooth color. The action is very tight and the lock-up is perfect. The 6 chambered cylinder has about 60% of a faded blue remaining and clustered spots of pitting here and there. The oil finished grips are in excellent condition have good edges and fit to the metal perfectly; a clear inspector’s cartouche is visible on the left side and on the bottom of the grip both sides is stamped "D". The trigger guard is brass and has a pleasant color.

This revolver is overall a good-looking weapon and a 100% honest example of a Civil War classic.   [pe][ph:L]
