This is one of only some 39,000 such sidearms produced by Samuel Colt’s firm. The .36 caliber Model 1861 Navy was the streamlined version of the Colt M1851 Navy, a premier medium caliber handgun. This type of cap and ball percussion revolver was produced in Colt’s New York City facility from 1861 through 1873. Sam Colt designated the term "Navy" to explain the caliber of .36; and he did indeed sell a number directly to the Navy Department.

Manufactured sometime in the 1865, this revolver is a good example of a personal sidearm that saw use during the very last months of the American Civil War. The revolver bears no government cartouches or inspector stampings on metal components or walnut grips. The metal portions have a now turning to brown gun metal gray color and no signs of original finish remain. There is scattered small bumps and dings from moderate use, but these impart character to the weapon. There is no surface rusting. The serial number "26663" is marked on all components including the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt strap, cylinder, wedge and spline. The revolver has a round 7½ inch long barrel with attached creeping style loading lever. The barrel, with good rifling, on top has a worn maker's address marking that reads: ADDRESS COL. SAM'L COLT NEW YORK U.S. AMERICA".

The mechanics are tight with strong half cock and full cock positions. The cylinder is unrebated. It has a scene has roll-engraved naval engagement scene showing battle between the Republic of Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy. The cylinder is identical in color patina and wear to the other iron components.  All cylinder pins are worn down as normally found. The six original nipples are in place with no breaks or broken sections. A nice, clear "COLT'S PATENT" stamp appears on the left side of frame while the brass trigger guard exhibits ".36 CAL" on the left rear shoulder. The 3 frame screws are good and original but one, the middle one, has suffered. The original matching one-piece walnut grips are in good condition with just very slight shrinkage at the bottom edge corners; they appear to have a thin coat of varnish on them. The brass butt strap is in good condition but does have a few dents and dings to its surface. The butt plate has no notch to accommodate a shoulder stock.

This is a scarce Colt Model 1861 Navy .36 caliber revolver that would be perfect to complete a Civil War, Indian War or Wild West collection. [pe] [ph:L]
