This is a good example of an original Colt 1851 Civilian, .36 caliber Navy Revolver. This one was manufactured in early 1864, and it bears the serial number "179995".  All serial numbers match including the wedge. The iron components have a gun metal gray patina color mixed with age blemishing and minor pitting. This six-shot revolver features an un-rebated cylinder with a 7½ inch long barrel. The barrel has no original factory blue and otherwise has gun metal gray color overall. The barrel is stamped on the top flat " ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW YORK U.S. A "; this is worn but readable. The rifled bore is good. Little original case color remains on the three-screw frame but this like the barrel is a gun metal gray color. It is stamped on the left side "COLTS PATENT". The cock has consistent color.

The revolver has good mechanics. The rolled (engraved) naval engagement scene of the Republic of Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy on the cylinder is 40% visible while "COLT'S PATENT" followed by "9995" is clear. All nipples are good. The cylinder itself is that gun metal gray color. The loading lever is in this same finish. There is no rust on the revolver. The brass backstrap and trigger assembly has 0% of the original silver plating. The one-piece grip fits perfectly and has varnish on it but this has worn smoothly and uniformly. The initials "M. W" are scratched on the bottom of the backstrap".  This is a nice-looking revolver made in 1864 as the Civil War raged.  [pe] [ph:L]
