The varied design elements of this beautiful pistol suggest it originates from the region of Alsace-Lorraine. Alsace and Lorraine were located in the region that today comprises modern-day France, western Germany (including the Saarland), parts of Belgium, and northern Italy.
The original flint and steel pistol measures 12 inches in total length with a 6-inch .60 caliber bore all brass barrel. The barrel is beautifully turned, and the last 3 inches simulate a cannon at its muzzle end. Six inches running back from here the barrel has 5 flat sides each 3/4 of an inch across. On the far left flat near the breech there is a small proof or maker's mark which has yet to be identified. The 4-inch banana shaped convex lock plate is brass; this includes the pan. The cock, frizzen (or steel) and the frizzen spring are iron. The iron top jaw and screw are original. There is no makers name on the pristine lock plate and the mechanics are perfect. The walnut stock is flawless with what looks like "linen-fold" raised carving behind the iron barrel tang. All the mountings on the stock are beautifully and tastefully rendered castings. This includes: 2 ramrod entry pipes, the trigger guard, the side plate and the exquisite cast and chased large eagle headed butt plate. The bird's beak contours with the stock creating a marvelous look! The ramrod is iron with a brass button end; old but it is probably a replacement. The condition of this pistol is close to perfect. Connoisseur quality. [pe] [ph:L]
