This extremely well-made unaltered flint lock pistol dates ca. 1780-1800. It was based on the Western European Horseman's pistol of the same era, but it is a period facsimile made by a skilled gunsmith living south-east of the Danube, in North Africa or the Middle East. These were marketed to gentlemen, military men and Sheiks typically in the Muslim world.

The 19-inch-long pistol with its captive carved ramrod, meaning it does not withdraw, is typical of the genre; Eastern warriors including Tartars and Cossacks, wore the ramrod suspended from their neck or a baldric of some form. There are 2 faceted iron pipes, but these are for show. The 12-inch barrel is 1/4 octagonal and the forward 9 inches round. It has floral and linear designs and is about .56 caliber. The lock plate with its waterproof pan may actually be Italian or French made and it bears a gunsmith's name that may be a real person, but he did not make this weapon nor this lock. The mechanics are tight and all lock components are original. On the side opposite the lock plate is a side plate of iron. There is a finely wrought iron trigger guard that is 8 inches long and nicely cast. The coin silver butt plate has long 3-inch straps and the contour of the stock in the butt area gives the appearance of a 1760 date pistol. There is an ornate silver wrist escutcheon and the weapon's stock is inlayed overall with silver wire. The overall condition is excellent and the quality better than most of the type. If one were looking for the type of weapon carried by a Barbary pirate fighting the US on the shores of Tripoli this muzzle loading flintlock pistol is perfect. Please click on this link (First Barbary War - Wikipedia). This weapon is untouched and in a wonderful state of preservation.    [pe][ph:L]
