This is a Colt Model 1861 Navy .36 Caliber 6 shot revolver. The serial numbers match throughout on this handgun, and this is an extremely low "788"; actually an 1861 production date and probably pre-war. This handgun rates very good for condition, it is complete and all original, with good markings on the metal components. The metal overall is smooth, showing just some small light dings here and there with some darker gray stains and a little light freckling from firing. The 7 1/2-inch barrel shows mostly gray mixed with thin brown and with small stains at the breech there can be made out spots of factory blue. The barrel address is: “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA,". The front sight is in place. The loading assembly is good, showing even a hint of blue. The cylinder is a gunmetal color with brown age tones and some small stains. The cylinder is unrebated. The naval battle scene on this cylinder is good as are the Colt patent and serial number stamped on it "788". The nipples are dark but not battered down.
The frame is smooth metal showing a faint bluish gray and a whiff of original casehardening particularly on the right side. The frame screw slots show some minor turning. The "COLTS" over "PATENT" stamp on the left frame shows light wear. The hammer and trigger show traces of blue; the trigger more so. The brass trigger guard assembly and backstrap have a pleasing mellow tone and have minor dings from field use. A nice, clear "COLT'S PATENT" stamp appears on the left side of frame while the brass trigger guard exhibits ".36 CAL" on the left rear shoulder. The single grip wood to metal fit is tight. The grip has good dark rich color with no original finish, and both sides show handling and wear marks. The mechanics are tight. A three-digit Colt Model 1861 Navy, used on both the sea and land.
