This is a solid, honest example of the Remington-Rider Pocket Revolver, one of the more distinctive percussion pocket pistols of the Civil War era. Based on the patents of Joseph Rider, these little .31 caliber five-shot revolvers were produced by Remington at Ilion, New York, from about 1860 into the early 1870s. They are instantly recognizable by their unusual "mushroom" shaped cylinder, which was designed to reduce weight while keeping the chambers full length. Small, reliable, and easily carried in a coat or vest pocket, these revolvers were popular private purchase sidearms with officers and civilians alike during the war years.

The 3" octagon barrel is clearly marked "MANUFACTURED BY REMINGTONS ILION N.Y. RIDERS PT. AUG. 17, 1858, MAY 3, 1859" and retains its original brass cone front sight. Serial number 5679 is found on the frame beneath the trigger guard and on the barrel, placing this example early in production.

The metal has toned to a pleasing, even brown patina with some light freckling and scattered wear on the barrel, while the markings remain legible. The brass trigger guard has a mellow, untouched color. The checkered grips are in very good condition with crisp checkering and the original escutcheons. The loading lever is present and functional, and the nipples remain in place on the cylinder.

Mechanically the revolver is good, with proper timing and lockup. There is slight play in the cylinder, typical of these revolvers. The bore is good with rifling remaining.

An attractive, early-numbered example of a classic Civil War era pocket revolver that would make a fine addition to any percussion or Remington collection.  [cm] [ph:L]
