This is an attractive example of a European pinfire pepperbox revolver made by Fraikin. Pocket arms like this were popular in Europe, and many also found their way to America during the Civil War era. The pinfire cartridge, developed in France by Casimir Lefaucheux, was one of the first practical self-contained metallic cartridges. Pinfire revolvers like this one were imported in large numbers during the 1850s and 1860s, when demand for personal sidearms was at a height.
Instead of a single barrel and separate cylinder, this revolver uses a six-shot fluted barrel cluster that rotates as a unit, giving it its classic "pepperbox" form. The design is compact and elegant. It has a rounded hammer shroud at the rear of the barrel cluster, a folding trigger that tucks up for carry in a pocket, and a hinged loading gate at the front with a removable center pin. The frame is marked "FRAIKIN" on the left side, and serial number 383 is stamped on the right side of the frame.
The fluted barrel cluster retains a good amount of dark blued finish, especially in the flutes, with some wear to bright metal on the high edges. The frame and trigger have toned to a smooth gray patina with light scattered freckling. The markings remain legible. The smooth black grips are in very good condition with a pleasing shape and the original oval escutcheon. Mechanically the revolver is very good.
A handsome and interesting pinfire pepperbox that would make a fine addition to any collection of European or Civil War era pocket arms. [cm] [ph:L]
