This is a nice example of the Colt Open-Top Pocket Revolver, Colt's answer to the popular Smith & Wesson rimfire pocket revolvers of the post-Civil War era. Introduced in 1871, these little seven-shot .22 rimfire revolvers sold well, with more than 100,000 produced through the 1870s. They were inexpensive, reliable, and easily carried, which made them a common companion for travelers, shopkeepers, and townsfolk of the period. They take their name from the absence of a top strap over the cylinder, a feature that harkens back to Colt's earlier percussion designs.

This example has the classic combination of a brass frame with a nickel-plated barrel and cylinder, a spur trigger, and smooth walnut bird's-head grips. It is fitted with the first model hammer. The barrel is marked "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A." and the left side of the frame is marked "22 CAL." Serial number 78069 is stamped on the butt of the frame, and the number also appears on the barrel.

The nickel on the barrel and cylinder shows wear consistent with carry and age, with areas of flaking and light freckling, while the markings remain legible. The brass frame has toned to a soft, mellow patina and lost its yellow tone in some areas. The walnut grips are in good condition with some light handling marks and dings, and they retain a nice warm color. Overall, the revolver shows mostly finish wear, as seen in the photos. The action and mechanics are good, and the cylinder lockup is tight.

A solid, honest Colt pocket revolver from the 1870s that would make a fine addition to any Colt or frontier-era collection.  [cm] [ph:L]
